Women-oriented music series debuts in Brooklyn

Brooklyn residents launch a new series that features performances by established and emerging women artists and performers. Brooklyn House Party founders, Caitlin Meissner and Yarrow Lutz (both performance artists with plenty of notches in their respective belts), partner with local venue Cafe One Hope to create an intentional safe space for women to create and audiences to participate, encouraging marginalized voices to experiment with material, reach new listeners, and build community for opportunity that extends beyond the one-night-engagement.

A once-a-month event, Brooklyn House Party offers carefully curated live experiences with some of the most talented women performers in New York City. For the past two years, performance poet Meissner has been curating and coordinating the all-woman, community-oriented Saturday Performance Series at The Lower Eastside Girls Club. “Many women approach me to perform at the Girls Club. I had a full year of weekly shows booked in less than a month. There is a clear need for more ‘rooms of our own’.” Brooklyn House Party vows to build that room. Co-founder Lutz, also a singer songwriter in the group Lady OsoFly, comments “We’ve seen the majority of women performers here in New York City and these are the cream of the crop. We want you to know who they are!” Caitlin adds, “Our extensive artist roster means that we have the ability to curate a variety of exciting and fulfilling experiences. These women are special. Pairing them with regard for the audience brings a whole new kind of magic.” Abracadabra, ladies, the arts are alive and well in Brooklyn!

Join Brooklyn House Party for their second showcase on April 24, 2008, 8pm at Cafe One Hope, featuring soul/jazz artists Grace Kalambay, Karma Mayet Johnson and spoken word poet Eboni. Caitlin Meissner and Yarrow Lutz host the evening along with music by DJ Sabine and break dancing by Tanya. Cafe One Hope is located at 1 Hope Street at Roebling, one block south of Metropolitan and is accessible via the J/M Train to Marcy or G Train to Lorimar/Metropolitan.
